By Mike Guarino
People change jobs or careers for a variety of reasons, such as better pay, a move to a new city or state, or they were just ready for a new challenge. I fall into the latter category. I spent many years working in Corporate America as a successful IT professional, but I always felt that something was missing. I was pretty happy with my career but over time I began to realize that I wanted to spend my time making a real difference in people’s lives. I ultimately chose a career as a financial advisor because of my father. He spent over 20 years in the industry and I saw how happy he was helping people prepare for the future. In 2008, my father and I founded Guarino Wealth Management. Sadly, my dad passed away in 2018 but I continue to lead the firm and continue his legacy. It’s my hope to have my three sons join me in this field that has become my passion for over a decade.
If I could sum up my entry into the financial industry in one word, it would be slow. In other words, it wasn’t a straight shot to a pre-planned end result even though I grew up watching my father turn his passion into a lifelong career as an advisor. First, after earning my bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University, I spent 6 years as a supervisor for UPS and was later promoted to a position in Information Services. Once I closed that chapter of my life, I worked for ADP as a manager of information technology for 12 years before joining Guarino Wealth Management. Now, over 10 years later, I am thankful to be investing my time and energy into my clients’ lives on a daily basis, putting both my skills and passions to good use.
My Role Today
As an independent financial planner and wealth advisor, I spend my days prioritizing the financial future of my clients. I’ve chosen to work closely within the IT community because I feel that I fill a void here. I know what a day in the life of an IT professional is like. I also realize that IT professionals share many similarities when it comes to their finances. I also leverage my background in technology to provide comprehensive and personalized financial strategies such as reducing concentrated stock positions over time, retirement planning, estate planning, generational wealth transfers, and benefits analysis. My CDFA™ designation allows me to help better collaborate with my clients.
Ups And Downs
Like any job, being a financial advisor has its challenges. It’s never fun to be the bearer of bad news, whether it’s telling someone they aren’t on track to retire on time or that their projected healthcare costs may eat into their nest egg. However, the good far outweighs the bad. I love showing people the benefits of financial planning and using software to play out different scenarios, showing them what their future lives could look like. My favorite days are the ones where I can tell a client that they can retire confidently!
